DFB Cup: Joker Wind defeats Wolfsburg against Dortmund

As of: October 29, 2024 11:28 p.m

In the duel between two crisis-hit clubs, VfL Wolfsburg scored a breakthrough thanks to joker Jonas Wind. However, the cup success against Borussia Dortmund was very difficult in terms of football.

Jonas Wind made the late decision in the 117th minute to make it 1-0 after extra time. Beforehand, the fans on both sides had to suffer for a long time – before the decisive knockout blow for Dortmund came.

“That means a lot to me”said the hero of the evening happily in the Sportschau interview immediately after the final whistle. “The crucial thing was that we simply had more energy than Dortmund in the end.”

BVB went into the party badly damaged not only in terms of self-confidence, but also in terms of personnel. There was still enough for a properly equipped starting eleven, but Pascal Groß had to help out as right-back and, apart from keeper Alexander Meyer and Marcel Sabitzer, who was plagued by back problems, only players from the A-youth and the U23 were on the substitute bench.

Schlotterbeck makes a mistake and saves, Beier hits the post

Nico Schlotterbeck showed early on that the recent appearances in the league and the Champions League had left a clear mark. The national player made a mistake when trying to clear the ball far too casually against Wolfsburg's Patrick Wimmer, but then threw himself into the path of the shot and made up for his own mistake.

Schlotterbeck then found his way into the party better and was also involved in Dortmund's first big chance. After his precise pass deep, Maximilian Beier started free, but only hit the right post when he finished. Wolfsburg also looked for a way forward, but Wimmer's shot in the 20th minute just missed the target.

Only half chances by Amoura and Majer

The stakes remained high on both sides, but there was also a lot of heavy play involved. After a good header chance for Serhou Guirassy after a cross from Groß (24'), there was hardly anything concrete happening in front of either goal. In the quarter of an hour before the break, Wolfsburg had more of the game, more than an opener from Mohamed Amoura (33'), which Gregor Kobel let ricochet forward, and a missed shot from Lovro Majer (44'). .

Things didn't get any better in the second half either. However, VfL did even less to advance, Dortmund stuck to their favorite stylistic device: crosses to Guirassy, the center forward, however, neither in the 52nd (just over) nor in the 65th minute, when he found a Wolfsburg keeper Kamil Grabara failed.

Siebert lets Nmecha get away with yellow

At this point, however, Dortmund should have already been outnumbered. In the 56th minute, Felix Nmecha kicked Wimmer's leg with his studs well above ankle height, and he had to be substituted a short time later with the clearly visible injury. DFB top referee Daniel Siebert only drew a yellow card for this brutal foul – since there is no video evidence in the second round of the cup, this wrong decision stood.

In terms of football, the action quickly came to a complete standstill. A long-range shot from Julian Brandt two meters over the goal in the 72nd minute was the most dangerous thing BVB got into. But even less came from Wolfsburg until Ralph Hasenhüttl provided a breath of fresh air with a three-man substitution ten minutes before the end.

Tomas hits the crossbar after a counterattack

Jonas Wind then had the only real chance to score in the final phase of regular time, which was even extended by eight minutes of added time. The Dane failed twice in the 85th minute after a free kick cross from Maximilian Arnold: first Ramy Bensebaini blocked his shot, then he asked a little too high on the second attempt.

The Wolves also had the first chance in extra time. After a bad pass from BVB youngster Cole Campbell, VfL led a lightning counterattack, which Tiago Tomás completed with a shot onto the crossbar after a cross pass from Dortmund loanee Salih Özcan. The Siebert team wanted to see an offside position, but it was definitely not the autumn war.

Gerhardt is lucky – then the wind still hits

The referee remained in focus: In the 102nd minute, Wolfsburg's Yannick Gerhardt blocked a shot from Nmecha with his elbow, saving the already beaten Grabara. Siebert allowed play to continue; with VAR there would probably have been a red card for Gerhardt and a penalty for Dortmund.

Siebert was absolutely right in the 115th minute when Dortmund vehemently demanded a penalty – but Schlotterbeck had shot his opponent in the thigh and not in the hand. When both fan camps were already looking forward to the penalty shootout, Wind put the lid on it: his low shot in the 117th minute was the deciding factor.
