Dodgers win the World Series after defeating the Yankees 7-6 in a rollercoaster ride. Game 5: Highlights

The Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the New York Yankees 7-6 in Game 5 on Wednesday to win the World Series four games to one.

The Dodgers trailed 5-0 before scoring five runs in the fifth inning, all on three fielding errors by the Yankees. New York took the lead back in the sixth inning, but two sacrifice throws from Los Angeles at the start of the eighth inning gave the visitors the lead for good.

“We just took advantage of every mistake they made in that inning,” Dodgers outfielder Teoscar Hernández said of the fifth. “We put together some good batsmen. We put the ball in play. A lot of people say, ‘If you put the ball in play, things can happen.’ It happened to us in that inning and we scored five runs.”

First baseman Freddie Freeman won World Series MVP by hitting four home runs and driving in 12 runs in the five games. Freeman hit a home run in each of the first four games of the series.

“That’s our goal every spring training,” Freeman said after the win. “To make it happen with this group of guys, I couldn’t ask for a better year. Holy cow.”

The Dodgers have won two World Series in the last five years, having also won during the pandemic-shortened season in 2020. Los Angeles' last full season title was in 1988.

The Dodgers were dominant in both the batter's box and on the mound during their postseason run.

Los Angeles defeated the New York Mets in six games of the National League Championship Series, outscoring the Mets 37-7 overall in the four wins.

Against the Yankees, the Dodgers' pitching staff continued to stifle a powerful lineup, while Los Angeles held New York – which ranked third in the MLB with 815 runs scored in the regular season – to just seven total runs in the first three games of the season Series.

Several players from this year's Dodgers team were also on the 2020 World Series team, including Mookie Betts, Max Muncy, Kiké Hernández and Walker Buehler. Freeman won a title with the Atlanta Braves in 2021.

It is the third championship for manager Dave Roberts, who led Los Angeles in 2020 and also won once as a player with the Boston Red Sox in 2004.

“There is no quitting on this team,” Dodgers reliever Blake Treinen said after the game. “If we don't get the result we want, there are always people out there encouraging each other and challenging ourselves to be better. That’s why we won tonight.”

Meanwhile, it's the first World Series victory for Los Angeles superstar Shohei Ohtani, the presumptive NL MVP who signed a 10-year, $700 million contract with the Dodgers before the season. Ohtani had not appeared in the playoffs before this year. He partially deferred $680 million of his salary to help the franchise spend more money around him.

The Yankees won 94 games during the regular season, the best in the American League. Center fielder Aaron Judge, who hit 58 home runs and drove in 144 runs in the regular season, is expected to win AL MVP. But he struggled in the postseason, hitting just .184 with three home runs in 14 games.

New York hasn't won a World Series since 2009.
