NFL star and former MTSU player announces death of his 1-year-old daughter

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WSMV) – An NFL star joins his pro and college football families in mourning the loss of his 1-year-old daughter.

Charvarius Ward of the San Francisco 49ers announced his daughter's death on Instagram Tuesday afternoon. Ward, a former MTSU Blue Raider, said his daughter Amani died Monday morning.

MTSU released a statement supporting Ward during this difficult time:

“Blue Raider Nation is saddened to learn of the passing of Amani Joy. Charvarius, your Blue Raider family is praying for you and your family at this time.”

New head coach Derek Mason also released a statement supporting the defensive back:

“Our thoughts and prayers are with @itslilmooney and his family during this incredibly difficult time. We at the Blue Raider Football Family and the MTSU Faithful love you and God bless you.”

The 49ers also released a statement following this tragic news:

“The 49ers family is devastated by the sudden death of Charvarius Ward's beloved 1-year-old daughter, Amani Joy. Amani truly embodied pure happiness and brought joy to everyone around her with her sweet demeanor and infectious laugh. We will continue to grieve with Charvarius and Monique and send them our love and support during this unimaginable time.”

Ward spent his junior and senior years in Murfreesboro. He spent his NFL career with the Kansas City Chiefs and the last few seasons with the 49ers. He is a former Pro Bowler and a Super Bowl champion.
