Trump rally erupts after Biden's 'garbage' remark is revealed

Former President Donald Trump's rally erupted Tuesday after it was revealed that President Joe Biden appeared to call Trump's supporters “trash” in a conversation with Latino voters.

Florida Senator Marco Rubio took the podium at Trump's rally in Allentown, Pennsylvania, telling the crowd that he had “breaking news” for them.

“Just moments ago, Joe Biden declared that our supporters are trash,” Rubio said as the crowd began to boo and cheer.

The Florida Republican was referring to comments President Joe Biden made earlier in the day during a Zoom call with the organization Voto Latino.

In the call, Biden referenced Trump's rally at Madison Square Garden, particularly comedian Tony Hinchcliffe's description of Puerto Rico as a “floating island of trash.”

“The only trash I see out there is his supporters – his demonization of Latinos is unconscionable and un-American,” Biden said in the call a clip broadcast CNN.

“He's talking about the Border Patrol, he's talking about nurses, he's talking about teachers, he's talking about everyday Americans who love their country and dream big again and want to support you, Mr. President,” Rubio said in response to Biden's comments. “And I hope that your campaign will apologize soon for what Joe Biden just said. We are not trash, we are patriots who love America. Thank you for your candidacy, Mr. President.”

Trump walked back to the podium as the crowd began to cheer and applaud him.

“Wow,” Trump said. “That's awful. That's how it stands. That’s what it says.”

He then drew a parallel to when then-Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton called Trump supporters “deplorables” during the 2016 election, a move for which she was widely criticized.

“You did, remember Hillary, she said deplorable, and then she said irredeemable, right?” Trump said. “But she said deplorable, and that didn’t work. Garbage is worse in my opinion, right? But he doesn't know, you have to please forgive him. Please forgive him because he doesn't know what he said. “

The White House released a statement Tuesday evening seeking to clarify Biden's comments.

“The president called the hateful rhetoric at the Madison Square Garden rally nonsense,” White House spokesman Andrew Bates said.

He also provided a transcript of the White House call in which Biden was quoted as saying that Puerto Ricans “are good, decent and honorable people in my home state of Delaware. The only garbage I see floating out there is that of his supporters – his.” – His demonization of Latinos is incomprehensible and un-American. It is a complete contradiction to everything we have done, everything we have been.”

Biden also posted a response from his official account on X, formerly Twitter.

“Today I called the hateful rhetoric about Puerto Rico expressed by Trump supporters at his rally at Madison Square Garden trash — that’s the only word I can think of to describe it,” the post reads. “His demonization of Latinos is unconscionable. That's all I wanted to say. The comments at this rally do not reflect who we are as a nation.”
